Set long-term, intermediate, and short-term goals. Imagine goal setting as mountain climbing. To reach the summit, you must break the climb into parts (intermediate goals) and steps (short-term goals).

Set targets and evaluation dates. TrainingPeaks’ Annual Training Plan lets you enter season goals and training targets online. Goal setting requires feedback from self-reflection or a coach. The comments you receive along the way will help you adapt your short and long term goals. 

Set training and racing goals.

Training and racing goals are equally vital. Daily or weekly training goals might help you keep focused on the moment’s training objectives. 

Set realistic goals

Aim high. If something is easy, why make it a goal? Goals must be realistic. Long-term discouragement might result from unrealistic goals. Goals motivate. They should push you to improve. It’s normal to not always attain a goal. It’s better to aim high and grow than to aim low and stagnate. 

Specific goals give your training program accuracy. Instead of “I want to improve my marathon time,” use “I want to qualify for London next year” (specific).

Measurable goals.  

Set  Specific goals that are measurable. 

Comparing race times to qualification times can help you qualify for London Marathon, for example. I want to run a Sub 3:30 marathon is a measurable aim. 

Keep your eyes on where you wish to go. “I don’t want to run slower than 40 minutes on a 10Km” (negative) “I want to break 40 minutes” (positive).

Set controllable goals wherever feasible. This involves prioritizing performance and process goals over outcome goals. Performance goals are time-based (e.g.,  running a 40min 10K). Process goals affect competition (e.g., keep my cadence high during a session). Race results are outcome goals (e.g., finishing on the podium).

Create and write down goals you’re willing to commit to and own. These are your ambitions, not what others expect you to attain.

Friends, family, and training partners can help you stay accountable to your goals and provide encouragement.
